where i find vintage

This skirt and sweater belonged to my grandma when she was in high school.

One of my favorite hobbies is finding different pieces of vintage clothing to wear, especially when there are stories behind them. Through the past years as my interest in vintage clothing has grown I have found that my greatest vintage finds and resources were much closer than I had originally thought. Here are a few tips that may help you realize that there are old stories and clothes to be found, and they might be right in front of you!
  • Talk to your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles or whoever you have a close relationship with. Ask them about their past.
  • Questions to ask: What were you doing at my age? What were you wearing? What was the world like when you were growing up? How did you meet grandpa, grandma, etc.? Do you have pictures I can see?
  • Take notes or record the interview (if they are comfortable with that) that way these pieces of history they are telling you won't be lost!
  • I guarantee you will learn new things about your grandparents, parents or whoever you are talking to. More often than not after the stories are told they will bring out old clothes or trinkets to show you. If they don't ask them, most likely they'll enjoy looking back on their past!
Through this method I have learned so many fun things and heard new stories from my grandparents and parents. Stories that may have been lost had I not asked them questions! Most of the time the people you ask will love that you made time to talk to them and learn about their past!
Through talking to my grandparents and parents I have rescued old dusty clothes long forgotten in closets and from decades past (the 1950's and the 1980's). I've tried on my moms old prom dresses, and wedding dress, as well as the clothes my grandma wore in high school! It's been such a fun experience learning more about their past, and finding vintage clothes that have meaning to me, and their wearers in the past.
I hope these tips help inspire you to learn more about someone else, as well as find some vintage clothes! Happy searching!

a little 80's

Today was a big hair, and dirty dr. pepper kind of a day. My big hair inspired me to pull out this sweater that my mom recently gave me.
A week or so before Christmas my parents cleaned out our coat closet and pulled out some long forgotten clothes from the 80's. My dad gave my mom this sweater when they were dating in 1983, he had a matching one. How incredibly sweet is that? Well long story short there was no way this sweater was going to be sent to the D.I. and one good washing later I now have a brand new old sweater!
How cute are my parents?
I'm grateful to my mom for giving me her old clothes, and her big hair. :)

banana seat bike

This is my mom's bike from the 1970's isn't it perfect? My grandparents found it tucked away in their garage and it still had air in the tires! It's a miracle bike, really it is. It still rides like a dream, the only downside is the breaks are a little slow on the uptake, but it's 40 years old so I'd say it's doing pretty good! When I ride it I feel like I've gone back in time. My one question for modern bike manufacturers is why did you stop making banana seats? They are 10 times more comfortable than normal bike seats, I just don't understand it!

skirts, bows, and mary jane's, oh my!

This is my first ever outfit post. My outfit for church today just came together really well and so I thought I would share it with you all. I love the vintage, simple and feminine vibe that it gives. Disclaimer: Please excuse my awkward modeling.

I like to call this my school teacher skirt. I love the classic/ vintage look of it. I also love the fact that its modest and long enough to wear to church! It's almost impossible for me to find skirts and dresses (with the exception of maxi skirts) that are long enough for me.
These are my favorite shoes, I cannot tell you how much I love Mary Jane's! I think they are the perfect vintage shoes. When I found these (even though they are kind of monsters and the heels are 4 inches tall) they had to be mine. They're also my favorite color, so how could I not love them?

My shirt has little bows all over it, I thought it added a little fun detail to my outfit. I also added these bright fun pink and orange earrings. The belt I'm wearing came with the skirt, so I can't take credit for that.
Nothing makes me feel more like I'm in an old fashioned movie than having to lift my skirts as I'm walking/running somewhere.
My Skirt is from: Modcloth
My Shirt is from: Forever 21
My Shoes are from: Forever Young Shoes
And my Earrings are from: Shopko (Oddly enough I always find really cute jewelry there!)

I hope you enjoyed my first outfit post. It's nothing fancy, just some fun pictures around my yard, but let me know if you want to see more posts like this!

*Photos are courtesy of my brothers cute girlfriend Ashley, she's the best! :)

vintage inspiration

I redesigned my blog today, and I'm really loving it.:)
I'm excited because I got a job this week!! I've been going crazy lately having nothing to do, so having a job is really going to be great! :) To pass the time I've been watching Downton Abbey, the Bachelor, and House Hunters. There I just admitted how pathetic my life has been this past month. I've also started going to a Zumbaclass that is really fun and has made me happier. I never thought I would turn into the girl who loves to exercise but I really do love it, it makes me feel so much better!
It's been hard to try and start rebuilding my life, after graduating. I don't have a lot of friends, I didn't have a job until yesterday, and I'm taking this semester off from school because I'm trying to decide what I want to go back to school for. It's been really frustrating and kind of hard, but I'm excited to be starting a new job next week because that's at least a positive step in the right direction.
I've also decided to start some sewing projects to fill my time. My sisters and I have decided that we want to make vintage dresses so I bought a couple of patterns I'm really excited about! The 1940's is my favorite era for style, I'm obsessed with it. I'll keep you guys updated with the progress of our dresses, and of course my dull and boring life! :)
